Course Overview and Objectives

Let's just jump into this. Or maybe baby steps first. (pun intended)

Understanding body mechanics is crucial for creating realistic and believable character movements in animation. It involves studying how the body moves, the physics behind those movements, and applying that knowledge to bring characters to life on screen. Whether your character is walking, running, or jumping, having a solid grasp of body mechanics will elevate the quality of your animations and keep audience eye balls glued to your work.

When animating a walk cycle, it is essential to pay attention to the subtle nuances of human movement. Walk cycles typically consist of key poses, but by carefully animating these key poses and adding transitional frames in between, you can create really interesting work. Observing real-life references, such as recording yourself or studying videos of people walking, can greatly enhance the authenticity of your animation.

How important is a good walk cycle?

Well, the human mind is so subconsciously triggered by human motion, that if you watched the silhouette of someone walking in the distance. Like, really far away. Beyond your own clear vision, you would know immediately if you knew that person. You would know if that was a parent, or a close friend instantly.

Don't believe me? Try it. It you will start to see and recognize that the more we consciously observe the movement and behaviour of those around us, the better animators you will become.

Many, many, many years ago I attended a talk given by some of the animators and special effect directors of the movie "Titanic." And the interesting problem they had was trying to use motion capture for the shot of the broad camera sweep of the ship, with people walking on the deck. This was all done in CG and the problem was that the CG characters walking all had the same walk. It didn't look real because they only used motion capture from one or two actors. They especially noted how the CG children walked like adults. We, as humans, are acutely tuned into how things move. And as animators, we must learn how to master our sense of observation.

Observation is our strongest tool as an animator.
